General Training Resources
  • After watching aghast some of the most archaic "dog training" strategies -- including kicking, jabbing, hitting, and the completely debunked "alpha roll" -- featured on National Geographic's "The Dog Whisperer," I was pleased to read the New York Times op-ed piece , "Cesar Milan: A Pack of Lies" that speaks to many of my own concerns about the incredibly ignorant, and oftentimes abusive, methods promoted on this show. There are very few quick fixes to problem canine behaviors, and physically or psychologically terrorizing a dog into submission is most definitely not one of them.

  • What every regional dog owner should know: Washington State Dog Law

  • From the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, A Model Community Approach to Dog Bite Prevention is a well researched, fact based, workable approach to responsible dog ownership, breed-specific legislation, and dog bite reduction.

  • The Problems With Head Halters by Suzanne Clothier explores many of the reasons why the use of head halters (eg, the "Halti") is ill-advised.

  • Training With the Prong Collar by Suzanne Clothier gives a trainer's views on this humane and effective training tool.
